The Burnhams Surgery Newsletter

To Your Good Health
At Burnham Market surgery your nurses are available for lifestyle and health advice.  We can offer a full personal health assessment
including family history, blood pressure, blood tests for cholesterol and help you to identify your current health status

We are fully trained, updated and resourced to help you give up smoking at a time when you feel ready to take up the challenge.

We are on hand to support and advise you on how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and level of fitness in order that you can enjoy your life to the full.  Why not pay us a visit and have a chat with Carole, Alison or Tory to discuss how you could feel better about your health.

We offer a comprehensive travel health service to our patients including malaria prophylaxis, bite prevention, how to keep you and your family safe while on your holiday at home or abroad, sun protection and immunisations.  The surgery is a designated yellow fever centre.

CFC INHALERS
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been used for many years as the propellants in inhalers (puffers) used to treat asthma and other related conditions.
Inhalers are now being produced which are environmentally friendly and do not contain CFCs - they are called CFC free inhalers.  The new inhalers will work in the same way as the old CFC-containing inhaler.
If you are in any doubt as to their use, or think you experience any problems with the new inhaler, please contact your GP or practice Nurse.

Attention Adults over 65 Years
Pneumococcal Vaccination for over 65 year olds
Every year 2 people in 1000 adults over the age of 65 will be admitted to hospital with pneumococcal pneumonia.  This can lead to septicaemia and meningitis.
For years we have been offering immunisation against this disease to 'at risk' groups and the elderly over the age of 80.  As of now we are able to offer the immunisation to most people over 65 years of age.
The injection is currently life long and we usually always carry stocks.
If you would like more information or would like to make an appointment, please contact the surgery in the routine manner.

Need Help to Stop Smoking
Carole and Tory are both able to offer help and guidance with stop smoking on an individual appointment rather than a group.
Both have completed the smoking cessation training and have access to nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), and the medications to help suppress craving (Zyban and Champix)
Please ring reception to book an appointment available Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Private Services at The Surgery to be charged VAT
As of the1st April 2006, the Burnhams Surgery will be VAT registered.
This is a situation that has been imposed on us by the Government and the Practice must therefore reluctantly pass these charges on.
As a result the Practice regrets that it will have to charge patients VAT on Private Prescriptions and other private services which can be viewed in this Portable File Document

NHS prescription charges will not be affected by VAT

Antibiotics - "Don't wear them out", says the Department of Health.
Because bacteria are clever, they adapt and find ways to survive the effects of an antibiotic.  They become 'antibiotic resistant' so that the antibiotic no longer works.  The more we use an antibiotic, the more likely it is that bacteria will become resistant to it.
So we need to look after them and not take them unnecessarily or intermittently.  You must complete the course as prescribed by your Doctor.
Antibiotics are important medicines. They help you fight serious infections that are caused by bacteria, so please "don't wear them out".

The Patient Participation Group
The group has been in existence for about six years and aims to present to the surgery the situation as seen by the patient. It cannot and does not wish to intervene between the patient and doctor and it cannot help to resolve personal problems of their relationship.

The purpose of the group is to discuss with the surgery staff the administrative operation of the practice. How something may be adjusted to make it more convenient to the patient, more acceptable to the staff.

The group is chaired by Peter Russell with Pat Layton the Practice Manager as its secretary, and has as members, individuals acting voluntarily, who represent the differing types of patient and the differing areas of the practice, and with varying members of the practice staff, depending upon the subject under discussion.

The group meets every two or three months and is very prepared to discuss any aspect of the management of the practice that you might like to raise. Put your ideas or queries to Peter Russell or Pat Layton, they will present your points to the group. Letters should be addressed to them at the Burnham Market Surgery.

There is a consensus within the group that its meetings and discussions have real value and should continue into the future.  See Group page for more information and Minutes of Meetings.
